With ground works beginning in 2012, the National Cycling Centre situated in Balmain, Couva (just north of the Ato Boldon Stadium) will be the first ever indoor cycling velodrome in the Caribbean. Furthermore, the NCC will also be certified as a Category I velodrome, allowing it to host major International cycling events inclusive of the Olympic Games and World Championships.
The regulation size for all world cycling events is a 250m long by 7m wide cycling track, one which T&T starves for. Even with the 'grassroot' facilities at the Arima Velodrome and Skinner's Park, T&T continues to produce world class athletes year after year. Therefore, it is exciting to see what T&T will produce with a world class velodrome at their finger tips!
The track features 45 degree banks and is made of Siberian Pine (spruce) with seating for 2500 spectators. It was engineered and constructed by world renowned track builder Schurmann Architects of Germany. Schurmann boasts a long repertoire of 144 tracks constructed inclusive of the Beijing Olympics, London Olympics and soon the Rio Olympics cycle tracks.
