Within a few years you will be cheering for names such as D'Angelo Harris, Ryan Maharaj, Kyra Williams among so many others. However, you had your chance this weekend to cheer them on from their developmental stage at the 2016 National Youth Track Cycling Championships at the newly refurbished 333m cycle track at the Irwin Park Sporting Complex in Siparia. For three days, cyclists from ages, 5 to 14 years took centre stage!

Kyra Williams

Friday night saw the youth take to the track in the Time Trial and Individual Pursuit in the Under 7, Under 9, Under 11, Under 13 and Tinymites (Under 15) age categories with both male and female cyclists coming out in their numbers for National Glory.
On Saturday, precious metal was at stakes in the Sprint and Scratch Race events while on Sunday the Keirin, Points Race, Team Sprint and Team Pursuit bragging rights were up for grabs.

D’Angelo Harris (Sonics) was the most impressive in the Tinymites Boys category as he captured every single event he participated in while Ryan Maharaj (Breakaway) and Kyra Williams (Open Road) were all victorious in their respective categories. The Under 11 Boys category however was the most competitive as Tyrese McMillian (AWCC), Elijah Moses (Bike Smith) and Kersheve Paul (Sonics) all shared the limelight atop the podium throughout the weekend.

Coaches Race

Sunday also featured the highly anticipated Officials/Coaches' Race where Mark Williams of Madonna took the crown ahead of Carl Williams. The crowd and cyclists cheered on as the adults jumped onto miniature BMX bicycles and raced around the track for two laps.

At the end of the three days, the main goal of ensuring that our Youth cyclists were given their time to shine was achieved.
The TTCF will like to express our utmost gratitude to the Rigtech Sonics CC for their sponsorship for the event and for the yeoman’s service performed to ensure that the venue was available and safe to use for the event. The TTCF will also like to thank the Siparia Regional Corporation for their kind hospitality and for the use of the Irwin Park Sporting Complex as they too have seen the benefit and importance of youth development.
